Adult Education and Vocational Training Institute (AEVTI)

AEVTI is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) within the NSW Department of Corrective Services. Courses provided to offenders are accredited and qualifications gained by offenders who successfully complete modules or certificates are nationally recognised. In 2003 - 2004 39% of offenders in correctional centres across the state participated in the courses provided by AEVTI.

The aim of AEVTI is to improve the literacy, language and numeracy skills of all offenders in custody to a level equivalent to the school Year 10 standard, and to provide further education and vocational training for offenders who need to improve their skills and qualifications for post release employment.

Offenders are referred to AEVTI by their response to indicator questions on the Intake Screening Form and the Level of Service inventory-Revised (LSI-R) assessment tool. Referral is appropriate for offenders who did not achieve a Year 10 standard at school (or whose literacy and numeracy skill level is demonstrably lower than Year 10 level), offenders who have a non-English speaking background or learning difficulties, and/or offenders with a limited employment history. Offenders may also self-refer to AEVTI, or be referred by Offender Services and Programs, custodial or Corrective Services Industries staff. Recommendations to participate in AEVTI programs are referred to the Case Management Team for inclusion into the inmate's initial Case Plan or Case Plan Review, except in the case of remandees whose referral proceeds directly from the Intake Screening Form.
