Wellington Correctional Centre

Wellington Correctional Centre is a minimum and maximum security institution for male and females. It is situated in the Central West, 360km north-west of Sydney and 50km south-west of Dubbo. Wellington is the reception prison for the Orana region.

How to Get There

Public Transport

The nearest railway station is Wellington Station on the Central Western Line, approximately 7km from the Centre. A taxi service operates from the station. Bus services also operate from Sydney and Dubbo.

Private Transport

Mitchell Highway: If travelling this route from south, proceed across the Macquarie River then turn right at the Mudgee turnoff. Similarly, if travelling this route from north, turn left at the Mudgee turnoff after entering the town limits. The Correctional Centre is approximately 6 km from the turn off and is well sign posted.

Visitor Information

Bookings: Visits must be pre booked. Bookings may be made on (02) 6840 2871 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 9:00am and 2:00pm.

12:15pm - 2:45pm

Conditions: Restrictions advised to visitors when booking to come to Centre are:-

• All visitors must have a booking.
• Maximum of 4 adults and a manageable number of children per visit.
• 1 visit per day.
• Bring 1 photograph or 3 other forms of ID to be established as a visitor
• Bring a $2 coin for locker hire.
• No track tops with hoods may be worn into the Centre.
• Must not be on any order such as AVO which would prevent a person from visiting an inmate.
• Visitors may deposit up to $100 per week into an inmate's account.

Legal Visits

Legal practitioners may visit seven days between 9:00am and 3:00pm. Notification of intention to visit must be forwarded on letterhead twenty four hours in advance.

Industries

Wellington Correctional Centre is a large industrial complex employing inmates in a wide variety of jobs that include:

• Engineering, including light fabrication;
• Bakery;
• Packaging and Assembly;
• Printing;
• Food Services Unit where meals are prepared for inmates;
• Laundry;
• Internal and External Ground Maintenance and Hygiene where inmates are involved in maintaining all the grounds and buildings;

In all business and service units inmates are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of vocational programs as part of the Work Readiness process.

Community Involvement

Wellington Correctional Centre has a Community Projects Program which takes selected minimum security inmates to work on local projects on a daily basis in the nearby community. It also has a Mobile Outreach Program which operates as a self sufficient camp enabling minimum security inmates to undertake community projects within a 500 km radius of the Centre.

Education

Wellington Correctional Centre provides a range of Educational programs for inmates. An Intensive Learning Centre is available for inmates who have low level literacy and numeracy skills and also focuses on vocational skills to assist inmates to improve their opportunities for post release employment. Centre wide, Education is available in the general areas of literacy and numeracy, computer skills and art. Inmates are also able to pursue tertiary level studies and additional courses are contracted through TAFE as the needs are identified. The Centre will be implementing a range of traineeships in the near future.

Special Programs

Wellington Correctional Centre has a wide range of programs to assist inmates to address offending behaviour. Programs may address issues such as addictive behaviour, alcohol and other drugs, anger management, life skills, domestic violence and parenting skills. The following programs are currently available at the Centre:

The Centre also partners with external agencies such as Barnardos to deliver programs to address specific needs.
