Tamworth Correctional Centre

Tamworth Correctional Centre is a medium security institution for males and is located in the Northern Tablelands, 397km north of Sydney. The institution serves as a reception correctional centre for Tamworth and surrounding districts.

A periodic detention centre for males was opened in March 1997.

How to Get There

From the New England Highway ( Brisbane Street) turn onto Peel Street following the signs to Manilla. Approximately 1 km west of Brisbane Street, turn right into Dean Street (follow the Hospital signs).

The Centre is located immediately on the left past Johnston Street. Car parking facilities are available via the Dean Street entrance.

Visitor Information

Bookings:

Bookings are essential for all visits. Visits must be booked by phoning the Visits Booking Line on (02) 6764 5360 between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm Tuesdays, Wednesday’s and Thursday’s.

Visit times:

Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays 9:00 am - 12 pm; 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm.

Conditions:

Visitors should contact the Centre to ensure the inmate they wish to visit is currently housed there. For more information go to Information for Visitors.

Inmates can have a maximum of two visits per weekend. Visitors may only book in for one visit at a time. If a second visit is required visitors will need to ring back on the Thursday.

Visitors may be asked to leave on a first come, first leave basis to make room for new visitors.

Inmates must apply for extra visits.

Before travelling, visitors should book accommodation which is available in the city.

Visitors need to produce two primary forms of identification.

Legal Visits

Legal practitioners may visit seven days between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm. Notification of intention to visit must be given by phoning the Centre on 02 6766-4977 twenty-four hours in advance.

Industries

Tamworth Correctional Centre has an industries section that employs 20 inmates. It is also involved in Community Projects that employs 12 inmates, and a building maintenance program that employs 8 inmates.

Special Programs

The Centre employs a welfare officer and an Alcohol and Other Drugs counsellor to assist inmates address relevant issues .

Community Involvement

Tamworth Correctional Centre has a high degree of involvement in environmental projects.
