  • Security

The maximum security Parklea Correctional Centre is surrounded by a high perimeter brick wall. The Work Release Centre, which is outside the perimeter walls, is enclosed by security fencing.

    History

The Centre was built as a maximum security institution for 220 inmates as a result of a recommendation of the Royal Commission into NSW Prisons (1976-8). It received its first inmates in November 1983.

A number of inmates rioted on 13 December 1987. A second riot occurred on 23 September 1990 over new rules for inmates' personal property. As a result of this riot the Centre was reclassified from maximum to medium security.

The Centre was designated as a correctional Centre for young offenders in February 1992 after successful completion of a pilot program.

In 1993 Parklea changed to a remand and reception centre.

In 1994, a minimum security Works Release Centre was opened external to the perimeter walls of the main centre for 88 inmates.

In 1996, Parklea Periodic Detention Centre was opened external to the perimeter walls of the main centre for 80 weekend periodic detainees.

In 2001, following improvements to security, the Centre was reclassified to maximum security.

On 20 February, 2003 Area 5 was opened to house an additional 222 inmates.

In 2005 Parklea Periodic Detention Centre was closed and periodic detainees were relocated to the Metropolitan Periodic Detention Centre in the Parramatta Correctional Complex. The work release inmates were relocated into the area formerly occupied by Parklea Periodic Detention Centre. The former Works Release area was re-furbished and renamed as the Compulsory Drug Treatment Correctional Centre.
