Temporary Court Security Officers are experienced retired Correctional and Police Officers of any former rank, who operate within court complex locations across New South Wales.
They operate under the direction of existing Permanent Correctional Officers within these court facilities. Training for these positions is limited to an orientation course conducted by CESU staff.
Temporary Court Security Officers are employed on a part-time casual basis. As such the general practice is to offer a shift of 7 hours. However this does not deny the Department the right to engage a TCSO on a shift of less\more than 7 hours. It should be noted that there is no minimum rate i.e. a TCSO is paid for the actual hour(s) worked. TCSOs can be engaged for a maximum average of 19 hours per week. The number of TCSOs to be engaged varies dramatically due to the unpredictable nature of the workload allocated to the Courts.
