Trade Overseer

Corrective Services NSW employs trade Overseers in commercial Corrective Services Industries (CSI) (www.csi.nsw.gov.au/csi/) providing inmates in correctional centres with vocational training to improve their employment opportunities when they are released from custody. Employment is a proven factor in reducing risks of re-offending.

CSI provides products and services such as food preparation, agriculture and forestry, engineering, furniture and textile production, ground maintenance, laundry, packing and assembly, telemarketing and a range of community projects.

A variety of trade Overseer positions are available across the State, in metropolitan and regional correctional centres.

Trade Overseers must have the same personal qualities required of Correctional Officers, and, like Correctional Officers, must complete suitability assessments and undertake Correctional Officer training.

Successful applicants must have a trade qualification or other industry experience. They must be able to work with inmates and engage them in programs and training which improve their motivation and skills.

If selected, trade Overseers, like their Correctional Officer counterparts, must complete an 11-week Primary Training course at the Brush Farm Corrective Services Academy at Eastwood. During this training program, all new officers are paid and, depending on their circumstances, may be eligible for accommodation at the Academy. Trade Overseers are employed as permanent on probation and complete a Certificate III in Correctional Practice. Confirmation of permanent appointment is considered after completion of the probationary period and this Certificate. Trade Overseers may elect, and are encouraged, to undertake further study.
